Walpurgis Night

Now we have celebrate Walpurgis Night April 30. While the name Walpurgis is taken from the eighth-century English missionary Saint Walburga, Valborg, as it is called in Swedish, has very little to do with religion and everything to do with the arrival of spring. Singing traditional songs of spring is widespread throughout our country. The songs are mostly from the 19th century and were spread by students' spring festivities.

  10. Reminds me a bit of a tradition people have in Puerto Rico. They save their Christmas trees till spring and then they burn them on Ash Wednesday. It is something that started with a religious meaning but overtime it has gotten into something people like to do.

  11. A lovely big fire! The Valborg fires were also a way of welcoming in spring and keeping away the evil spirits back in pagan times...

  13. A giant bonfire !. I love the bonfires. I usually do two huge fires each year, with the remains of pruning shrubs. One of them, in late April. From now on I will call the Walpurgis bonfire.
Of course, your photo is fantastic.
